🐾 Why Ethical Breeding Matters: Our Standards and Practices

By Laurentian Dachshunds

Welcome to Laurentian Dachshunds

If you’re here, you’re likely considering bringing a miniature dachshund into your life—or you’re already in love with their short legs and big personalities. At Laurentian Dachshunds, we believe that how a puppy is bred and raised makes all the difference.

We’re more than breeders—we’re caretakers of this remarkable breed. In this post, we’ll walk you through what ethical breeding means to us, and why it matters when you’re searching for a healthy, happy puppy.

❤️ Putting the Dogs First

At the heart of ethical breeding is one simple question:
What is best for the dogs?

Our adult dachshunds aren’t just breeders—they’re our companions. We prioritize their physical and emotional well-being every day. That includes:

  • Limited litters per dam to allow for rest and recovery
  • Retirement at a healthy, appropriate age
  • Routine veterinary care and preventative health screenings
  • A loving, enriched home environment—not kennels

We believe dogs raised with respect and care pass that stability on to their puppies.

🧬 Health Testing and Genetic Responsibility

Mini dachshunds are adorable and lively, but like any breed, they come with specific health concerns. That’s why we invest in comprehensive health testing before breeding.

Our screening includes:

  • IVDD risk assessment (Intervertebral Disc Disease)
  • PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) testing
  • Patella luxation screening
  • DNA and genetic panel testing for hereditary conditions

Only dogs who meet our high standards in health, temperament, and structure are included in our breeding program.

📜 We Follow the Breed Standard

We are a registered and ethical breeder who breeds only to the Canadian Kennel Club miniature dachshund standards.

Our focus is on:

  • Proper structure to help prevent injury
  • True dachshund temperament: bold, loyal, and affectionate
  • Coat variety and color that meets breed guidelines—not trends

We aren’t interested in exaggerating features or chasing fads. Our goal is to preserve the integrity and future of this beloved breed.

🐶 Raising Puppies the Right Way

All our puppies are raised in our home, surrounded by everyday sights, sounds, and snuggles. From birth, they receive:

  • Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)
  • Daily handling and social interaction
  • Exposure to adults, other dogs, and household activities
  • Foundational potty pad and crate training

This kind of early development leads to confident, well-adjusted puppies ready to join your family.

🏡 Matching Puppies With Their Perfect Homes

We make sure that we are doing our part to vet the appropriate families, to ensure we are placing our puppies in homes that are best suited for the breed and their proper care and love.

We also stay in touch—many of our families share updates with us for years. We’re always here to offer advice or celebrate your pup’s milestones.

💬 Why Ethical Breeding Matters

Ethical breeding matters because it:

✔️ Reduces genetic health problems
✔️ Preserves the breed’s temperament and structure
✔️ Produces better-adjusted, confident puppies
✔️ Gives families peace of mind

When you choose an ethical breeder, you’re not just buying a puppy—you’re investing in a lifetime of quality and care.
